Classes

Ballet Program:  ASDC offers a Ballet program designed to encourage students to enjoy the art and discipline of Ballet. Classes begin at age 3 with pre-ballet and progress to pre-professional. Influences to the curriculum come from the Classical French and Vagonova Russian methods. All ballet students will be schooled in Barre, Center, and Variations.

Tap:  ASDC offers tap to students age 4 and up. The tap curriculum is highly structured and graded to develop strong rhythm and precision skills. Tap is offered in combination with Ballet class-one complimenting the other.

Creative Movement:  This class is offered to 3 year-old students. It is an introductory class to Ballet and body movement. It is Ballet based, and we teach the proper Ballet positions and concepts on posture. We use a "game concept" incorporating familiar fairy tales that children recognize in order to teach body awareness.

Jazz:  ASDC offers jazz after the student has experienced two years of Ballet training (excluding the "Pre-Ballet" 3 year-old year). Older jazz classes develop strength in turns, jumps, leaps, and also experience the traditional jazz styles.

Private Lessons: ASDC offers private lessons to develop the student's personal skills at an accelerated rate. Lessons are upon instructor's approval and available on a limited basis.

Schedule

THE FOLLOWING CLASSES ARE SCHEDULED FOR THE FALL 2019 – SPRING 2020 SEMESTERS.

CLASSES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 3, 2019

  1. If you are a returning student to ASDC, you do not have to register again – just request your classes and we will confirm with you.

  2. If you are a new student, you must REGISTER as a new student with your Account information (parent) and Student Information (dancer). Then just request your classes and we will confirm.

  3. If you have questions for ASDC, please register in as a new dancer so we will have contact information. We also need to know your dancers age and dance background – please email this information to us and we can help you with class placement.

  4. All Students will be required to pay a $45 non-refundable Registration Fee once classes are confirmed.

  5. Classes start the day after Labor Day in September.

CREATIVE BALLET

Ages 3 - 4

Students are introduced to movement and music in a creative approach to learn the fundamentals of dance. These classes do not focus strictly on classical ballet movements due to the ongoing muscular and bone development of this age group. Classes meet 1x a week. Classes available are:
Class#15 - Wednesdays 3:30-4:00  Creative Ballet
Class#16 - Thursdays 5:30-6:00  Creative Ballet

PRIMARY LEVEL

Ages 4 - 5

Primary Level (Ballet & Tap)
Primary classes are designed to build interest in dancing, strengthen muscles, learn basic ballet vocabulary, and develop a sensibility of artistic and performance qualities. Tap is introduced at this level. Classes available are:

Class#14 Mondays 4:00-5:00  Ballet & Tap (First Year Tap)
Class#13 Mondays 4:00-5:00  Ballet & Tap (Second Year Tap)
and
Optional for Class #13 this year - Jazz - Mondays 5:00 - 5:30

LEVEL ONE

Ages 5 - 10

Ballet, Tap, & Jazz

At this level, students begin a more formal approach to classical ballet steps. Students learn from a curriculum which is based on the Classical French as well as Vagonova Russian syllabus and specifically designed for this age group. Tap is established and practiced in a structured and graded system. Jazz is introduced. Classes available are:

Class #12 - Tuesdays 4:00 – 5:30 Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Ages 5-7

Class #11 - Thursdays 4:00 – 5:30 Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Ages 5-7

Class #10 - Thursdays 4:00 – 5:30 Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Ages 6-7

Class #9 - Tuesdays 4:00 – 5:30 Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Ages 7-8

Class #8 - Wednesdays 4:00 – 5:30 Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Ages 7-9

Class #7 - Wednesdays 4:00 – 5:30 Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Ages 8-9

Class #6 - Mondays 5:30 – 7:30 Ballet, Tap, and Jazz Ages 9-10 *PRE POINT YEAR

Class #17 - Thursdays 5:30 - 6:30 - Tumbling for ages 6-12 - Our upper level tumbling class
 

LEVEL TWO

Ages 10-18
 All classes listed below, in LEVEL TWO require Teacher approval. It is strongly suggested that ALL classes be taken.

Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical

Students are introduced to a more demanding level of study incorporating elements and influences from major training styles in Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, and Lyrical. Attendance is very important to advancement. It is strongly suggested that the dancer take at least two hours of class per week.

Class #5 - Mondays 5:00 – 7:00 Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical *First Year Lyrical

Class #4 - Tuesdays 5:30 – 7:30 Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical

Class #3 - Tuesdays 5:30 – 7:30 Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical

LEVEL THREE

Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Hip-Hop

At this advanced level, all elements of dance are introduced at different times throughout the year. Attendance is very important to advancement. It is strongly suggested that the dancer take at least the Two Hours of class per week. Ballet Technique is the foundation of all forms of dance and is highly emphasized at this level.

Class #2 - Wednesdays 5:30 – 7:30 Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical Ages 14-15 (High School 9th – 10th grade)

Class #1 - Wednesdays 5:30 – 7:30 Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical Ages 15 – 18 (High School 11th – 12th grade)

DRILL TEAM PREP CLASS

Starts October 1st and meets every Tuesday from 7:30 - 8:30 through March. This class is designed to develop strong skills needed for drill team tryouts and performances.

“Ms. Gayle”is now in her 43rd year as a professional dance teacher. A graduate of Texas Christian University with a B.S., Ms. Gayle achieved certification to teach dance through both written and physical exam. A Master’s Degree was awarded by Texas A & M, Texarkana. Ms. Gayle was an original Texas Christian University “Showgirl” – the dance team featured at the University. She founded the Showstopper Drill Team at Pleasant Grove High School in 1983. Civic clubs include Jr. League Sustainer, TRAHC, Texarkana Community Ballet, and Women for the Arts. Ms. Gayle was a Parents Club President and Board Member for St. James Day School during the years her children were there. A former Miss Texarkana, she is a proud member of Chi Omega Alumni, Texarkana. Ms. Gayle is married to H.T. Burrow and they have two children, Trey, and Ali.

“Miss Ali” is a teacher and choreographer at ASDC. A 2012 graduate of Texas A & M – Texarkana, Ali also trained at the Kim Dawson Actors Conservatory in Dallas. As a local dancer, Miss Ali performed in Texarkana Community Ballet productions for over 10 years. She was featured as a Candy Cane soloist and as a Snow Princess Soloist in the Nutcracker. Miss Ali is a teacher member of the Texarkana Community Ballet. At the University of North Texas she served on the executive board of her sorority, Chi Omega, including the office of President. She is a Chi Omega Alumnae active in the local group. She is a former Miss Dallas and also received the Outstanding Dancer Award at the Miss Texas pageant. While in Dallas, she was also featured in regional television commercials. She obtained her certification by the Texas Education Agency in Dance and Physical Education. She is the past director of the Redwater Dazzler Drill Team.

“Miss Shelby” is a teacher at Pleasant Grove Middle School where she founded and directs the Star Stepper Drill Team. The team, soloists, and ensembles have received the highest awards at American Dance Drill Team Association and Showtime International competitions. She attends the Texas Dance Educator's Association convention every year to continue her dance education. Shelby also teaches Dance 1 and 2 at Pleasant Grove Middle School. Miss Shelby is a member of the Texarkana Community Ballet. She served at the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 Showstopper Captain. Her degree is in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin where she served as House Manager for her sorority, Chi Omega. She is certified in Physical Education and Dance by the Texas Education Agency. This will mark her 20th year with Gayle Burrow.

Shelby DeMuth

Makenzie started tumbling at age 5 AND continued through her senior year in high school. She was an all American Cheerleader for 4 years at Arkansas High School and also a member of the competition squad. She has worked with multiple tumbling coaches and has taught gymnastics for six years through the Arkansas School District. She is also a first grade teacher in TISD at Theron Jones where she is also director of the elementary cheerleading club.

“Ms. Tiffany” has 14 years of teaching experience with Pre-K through Kindergarten students. She has also served as a Sunday School teacher to the high school class at her church. She has taught in the classroom, church, and dance studio settings. This is her fifth year with ASDC in which she has taken classes and is trained in both ballet and tap. When hen she’s not at the studio she is running her sewing business or volunteering at the 1st Choice Pregnancy Center as a counselor and has a spokesperson. She is married to Chris Williams and they have four children – Travis, Hannah, Morgan, and Austin.

We are thrilled to announce the addition of Kristen (Crawford) Hutson to our teaching staff!  Kristen Hutson, a native to Texarkana, has been dancing for 20 years. Kristen discovered her love for dance and drill team early on. Growing up she was a participant in Texarkana Community Ballet for 9 years. She attended Pleasant Grove High School and was a member of the Showstoppers for 4 years. After high school she continued to pursue this avenue of dance, earning a spot on the prestigious World Famous Kilgore College Rangerettes. As a member of the 75th line, Kristen had the opportunity to take from renowned teachers Angela Aulds and Shelley Wayne. At Kilgore College, Kristen had the opportunity to expand her practice in many genres of dance, including Ballet, Modern, Tap, Jazz, and Hip Hop. Kristen worked as an Instructor for Cindi Rains’ Intensive Dance Company’s “Kickin’ It with Rains” Summer of 2016. Following her graduation from Kilgore College with an Associates of Arts, Kristen continued to pursue her education at Texas A&M University Texarkana. She currently serves as the director of the Pleasant Grove Middle School Star Steppers and looks forward to expanding her knowledge of dance through teaching.
